English and Islam: A Clash of Civilizations?

Abstract

There is a substantial amount of literature documenting the attitudinal resistance of Muslims towards English and the supposed conflict between English and Islam. This article provides a critical review of the writings and research on the issue and discusses some of the reasons behind this resistance, focusing on Muslims in Malaysia. It argues that although English is rooted in the Judeo-Christian culture, and often viewed as a primary vehicle for the transmission of "Western" values, the learning of English is not in conflict with Islamic values. This article also presents an Islamic perspective on the role of language and the attitude that Muslims should adopt towards learning languages. It concludes by emphasizing the need for English teachers to take into account the socio-cultural aspects of learning English when teaching Muslim students, and for Muslims to value the importance of learning English for the purpose of acquiring contemporary knowledge.

Learning English for the purpose of da’wah

Question

What is your view on a seeker of knowledge learning English, especially if he wants to use it for da’wah and calling others to Allaah?

Answer

Praise be to Allah.

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) was asked this question. He replied as follows.

Our view on learning English is that it is a means and it is a bad menans if the aim is bad. But the one thing that we must avoid is using it instead of Arabic. That is not permitted. We have heard some foolish people speaking English instead of Arabic, and some of the foolish people who are dazzled by the west, whom I regard as lackeys (of the west), teaching their children to use the greetings of the non-Muslims, and teaching them to say “bye-bye” when departing, and so on.

Because using this language instead of Arabic, which is the language of the Qur’aan and the noblest of languages, is haraam. It was narrated that the salaf forbade speaking in the tongues of the non-Arabs.

With regard to using it as a means of da’wah, there is no doubt that this is obligatory sometimes. I did not learn it and I wish that I had learned it. On some occasions I have found forced to use an interpreter who could not fully express what I wanted to say.

I will tell you a story of something that happened to me in the mosque of Jeddah airport, with some men from the Islamic Awareness organization. After Fajr prayer, we were speaking about the Tijaani sect and how it is a false sect that that apostatized from Islam. I started to say what I knew about them, then a man came and asked me for permission to interpret my words into Hausa.  I gave him permission, and he started to interpret. Then a man came rushing in and said, “This man who is interpreting for you is praising the Tijaaniyyah.” I was astonished and I said, “Inna Lillaahi wa inna ilayhi raaji’oon (Truly, to Allaah we belong and truly, to Him we shall return).” If I had known this language I would not have needed these cheaters. The point is that knowing the language of the people whom you are addressing is undoubtedly important so that you can convey the information to them. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And We sent not a Messenger except with the language of his people, in order that he might make (the Message) clear for them”

[Ibraaheem 14:4]

Importance of English for Ulama

   By: Muzammilur Rahman Mazahiri Nadvi

Everybody knows very well the importance of English language. It has become influential and international language. People think that, without it their documents are incomplete. According to the first primenister Jawaharlal Nehru: English is the window to the world.

Nowadays it is very necessary for Ulama to learn English language. Without learning it we can’t clarify the objections of the enemies of Islam because they object on Islam throw this language. Therefore Arunshorie, Taslima Nasreen, Salman Rushdi and Ashok Shinghal etc, they wrote against Islam in this way, many of Christians and Jews wrote a large number of books against Islam but it is a too much regrettable for ulama that till now ulama neither answered their questions satisfactorily nor a book was written against them in this language. This is because the English language is not taught in our madrasas as an important subject. And ulama don't try this field. If ulama knew this language Muslims never faced these bad types of situations and they would have answered satisfactorily. Actually these are ulama who can interpret Islam right way, they are inherits of Ambiya, they aware about Deen deeply. Some people think that   it is the language of America, Britain, and they are enemies of Islam. So it is not correct. Our prophet (Muhammad, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) never prohibited learning any language. Once upon a time prophet (pbuh) ordered to Zaid to learn Ibrani language in other place said

"من تعلم لغة قوم امن شرهم  " those who learn the language of any community they can save themselves from their mischief". This hadith shows that ulama can learn any language. Allah (Ta'ala) says in the holy Quran: وماارسلنا من رسول الا بلسان قومه, this verse also tells and describes that what is the importance of languages.

If we read and study our ulama's books, we will find that they ordered to learn English before two hundred years. Shah Abdul-Aziz (Muhaddith Dehlavi) had said about Muslim people that "Go and learn the English language". There is no poverty. Shaikhul Hind said that our ulama never refused to get the other nation’s knowledges and language. Maulana Nanautavi said that students of madaris should know and learn the general knowledge and modern education. Maulana Yaqoob Nanautavi said about this language that I shall get and learn the English language after coming back from my journey. Any how all these words and agreements are very clear and obvious about learning English for ulama, since ulama don't know how to use computer, internet etc. similarly when they come out from madrasas they feel hesitation to talk to educated persons while our ulama keeping it in view inserted to learn this language. Our Ulamas were not against of any language but they were against to adopt the western cultures. So it is the need of the hours. I think that Ulama should introduce English language in the place of Mantique and Falsafa. Alhamdulillah Darul-umoor is doing this work and it wants to quench the thirst of the nation. May Allah progress it lips and bound.
